Gifts of the Spirit
Do you have to experience the Baptism of the Holy
Ghost to receive the gifts of the Spirit, that are mentioned in 1 Cor.12?
Lets first look at the Holy Spirit. It says in 1 Cor.12:7 "but the
manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. "Galatians 4:6
says "and because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your
hearts, crying Abba, Father." Romans 8:9 says "But ye are not in the flesh, but
in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the
Spirit of Christ, he is none of his." We see from these scriptures that all saved
people get the Holy Spirit. When we ask Jesus to dwell in our hearts the Son doesn't leave
heaven to come dwell in us, the third part of the Godhead (The Holy Ghost) does.
So what about the speaking in tongues? If everyone receives the Holy Ghost
when they get saved, then shouldn't the Baptists, Methodists and all others be speaking in
tongues? Well in 1 Cor.14:22 it says that tongues are for a sign to those who believe not.
We see an example of this in Acts 2, when the Holy Ghost descended and they spoke in other
tongues (not to be confused with praying in an unknown tongue) .They spoke in the peoples
own languages (which they could not before) and preached to them, and three thousand were
saved that day. Some people do speak in tongues when they get saved, but Paul tells us in
1 Cor.12:28-30 that everyone doesn't get tongues and lists the importance of people in the
church in which people that have diversities of tongues are the bottom. When we experience
the renewing of the spirit (Titus 3:5), then it causes a stirring up of the gift which is
in us, whether it be tongues or prophecy or whatever. It's like getting turbo charged.
1 Cor.12:11-13 says that we are all one body of one spirit, using the gifts
that have been given to us all. John 16:23-24 says "Verily,
verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it to
you. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may
be full." If you want the use of these gifts and you have a desire to serve
Jesus, Then all you have to do is ask him to stir up your gift or gifts and teach you to
use them, and he will.
Blessings to all
